Karama Education Center

The Karama Education Center (KEC) is a primary school located in a rural area just outside of the town of Kihiihi in Southwestern Uganda. The school was founded in 2017 by Now Africa Initiative with support from The Chain Collaborative. Initially, KEC offered classes in grades 1 through 4.  Over the past few years, the school has experienced extensive growth and now offers classes through grade 7 as well as preschool. With this growth, the enrollment has blossomed to well over 360 students, almost triple the original student body.

Thanks to KEC’s dedicated teachers, the academic success of the students has far exceeded expectations. To date, two classes of 7th graders have graduated, and each of the 33 graduates has passed the exam required to move on to secondary school. Secondary education in Uganda consists of six additional years of schooling. However, because there are no secondary schools in the immediate area, students must relocate to pursue their academic dreams. Their only viable option is to attend a boarding school, where they must pay for their room and board. The average fee is $636 per year, which is far beyond the typical financial abilities of the students and their parents.

To meet this gap in education, Now Africa Initiative has launched a scholarship fund to cover the cost of providing a full secondary education for the top student in each graduating class. A monthly donation of $50 for 6 years covers the costs of fully educating this one student. To help “turn dreams into reality” (the KEC school motto), contribute to KEC’s scholarship fund today. Since 2014, with accompaniment from TCC, KEC has been able to:
